Types of wood for façades & profiled wood

Ladenburger Holzwerke process versatile types of wood with a wide-ranging portfolio.

Larch, spruce and fir are particularly suitable for façades. You can read their properties and respective benefits here.

  • European spruce

The region where European spruce is grown is Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
European spruce trees grow well in this area and are ideally suitable for structural uses with construction timber, Ladenburger laminated wood, glued laminated timber, but also for the production of frames and battens as well as our concrete formwork and tongue-and-groove board.

    Nordic spruce

Nordic spruce comes from Scandinavia, predominantly Finland and Sweden.
The growing seasons are shorter here and the climate is harsher. Compared to European spruce, Nordic spruce grows slower, thus giving it a finer structure, with discolouration being less common. We use Nordic spruce in all areas where visual grades and fine structures are required. Due to these good properties, Nordic spruce is enjoying increasing popularity in the facade area.
Taking the structural wood protection into consideration, nothing stands in the way of its use in the facade area. We like to recommend Nordic spruce for vertical facades, preferably with industrial pre-greying or coated with all over paint, depending on customer preferences.
Nordic spruce is ideally suited for layer-forming and non-layer-forming as well as for deep black treatments. With spruce we cover the biggest possible range of treatment options.

  • European larch
Ladenburger facades made of regional or indigenous
types of wood are high quality, sustainable and modern

European larch is somewhat more uniform and harmonious than Siberian larch in terms of its grain. This wood triumphs with its vivid grain and provides a particularly natural facade appearance.

    Siberian larch

Siberian larch originates from the eastern part of Russia beyond the Urals.
Very extreme climate conditions prevail in this region, with trees growing very slowly. The growth rings are accordingly close together and the wood structures very fine.
Compared to spruce and Douglas fir, Siberian larch has a much higher, natural durability and is therefore preferred in the facade and patio area.
A higher resin content as well as the tendency to form cracks belong to the characteristics of Siberian larch, which is why we do not offer any layer-forming or black surface treatments for these types of wood.
For this reason we supply Siberian larch untreated or with oiled surfaces. The variations here are numerous.

  • European silver fir

The growing areas for our silver fir trees are mainly located in the Black Forest and in Vorarlberg.
The wood of the silver fir contains no pitch pockets and the growth rings are mostly upright. Its appearance is therefore rather sleek and linear.
We supply our facade boards made of silver fir “knot-sporadically” in principle. Thanks to a special cutting technique, the boards are predominantly produced as a rift/semi-rift and then finger jointed. The finger jointing creates a pleasant pattern, which could be referred to as facade parquet. When it comes to silver fir, we offer – similar to spruce – all available surface treatments, even carbon black.
